>Well, with this short presentation, H. Ross Perot has re-entered the debate over spending, taxes and fiscal responsibility. His 1992 run for the presidency, while unsuccessful, managed to bring the topic to the forefront of the political debate at the time, and his message was largely co-opted by both the victorious President Clinton, and the 1994 freshman class of Republicans led by Newt Gingrich. Their combined efforts in raising taxes and cutting spending, combined with a large decrease in defense spending due to the end of the cold war, and a booming economy based on productivity growth led to a few years of budget balance from 1999 to 2001.
Unfortunately, Mr. Perot isn’t running for President, and both candidates aren’t talking seriously about fiscal responsibility.
Off to spend Father’s day with my family (14 month old son, wife, and in-laws). I’ll write more later.
