>The Economics of Charitable Giving

>A friend and I were discussing the deductibility of charitable giving over email the other day, so it was a fortunate coincidence that I found this article:

NYT Article

What I thought was most interesting was that the experiments performed by Dr. John List, apparently one of the pioneers in the fields, showed that it doesn’t matter so much whether a charitable contribution is matched 1:1, 2:1 or even 3:1, but that it’s matched at all. The theory is that people want to feel like they’re part of a larger team of people all pulling together, rather than “getting the biggest bang for their donated dollar”. I’m pretty surprised.
